Visa Subclasses

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

This visa is a permanent residency visa that requires the nomination by a state or territory government and must work and reside in that state for a minimum of two years.

Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 490)

It is a permanent residency visa where a nomination by the state or Territory must be obtained and subsequent work and residence must occur in that state for at least two years.

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)

The Subclass 491 visa allows skilled workers to be temporarily resident in regional areas of Australia and allows them to apply for permanent residency through the Subclass 191 visa.

Eligibility Criteria

Individuals may meet the eligibility criteria for the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa application if they show evidence of the following requirements:

  • Occupation on Skilled Occupation List – The occupation must be located on the appropriate Skilled Occupation List in Australia.
  • Positive Skills Assessment – The applicant must provide evidence of a positive skill assessment from the appropriate assessment authority for their occupation.
  • English Language Skills – The applicant must demonstrate that they meet the minimum English language skills criteria for visa purposes by sitting IELTS, PTE, or equivalent.
  • Points Score Criteria – To be able to access the Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa pathway, the applicants must demonstrate that it is achieved through the Subclass 189 at least with the minimum score of 65-points. But the higher SCORE (greater than 80-85) is where their chances to achieve this transition increase dramatically.
  • Age Out Criteria –  The applicants must be less than 45 years old, at the time they receive their invitation.
  • Health and Character Requirements – The applicant must meet health and character requirements as defined in the Australian immigration laws.

How to Apply

You can follow these 5 steps to apply for a Skilled Migration Visa:

Check Eligibility

Make sure your occupation is on Australia’s Skilled Occupation List and that you have the required points for your age, experience & English language skills.

Obtain Skills Assessment

Receive a positive skills assessment from the relevant Australian authority to verify qualifications and work experience according to Australian standards.

Prove English Language Skills

Pass an approved English language test such as one of the IELTS tests or one of the PTE tests and attain the minimum points requirement.

Submit EOI & Obtain Nomination

Submit an EOI via SkillSelect with your qualifications and experience. If nominated for Subclass 190 or Subclass 491, secure the state/territory/family nomination you need.

Lodge Visa Application & Await Outcome

Submit your visa application along with your documents needed, (ID, certificate, work references, health check) and wait for the outcome.

General skilled Migration is also offered through GSM Visa as a GSM Visa given to skilled workers seeking to migrate to Australia in order to work and settle there permanently. It is a point-tested visa, and the points are following the criteria of age, education, work experience and English proficiency and so on.

Greater sub-classes within the GSM individual classes include Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189): where there is no sponsorship to skilled workers; Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190): where there is the state or territorial sponsored skilled workers; Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491) which is temporary residency to the skilled workers to reside and work in the regional area of Australia.

The points are marked in terms of age, English language proficiency, qualification and work experience among others. The necessity is that one has to score a set number of points in order to be considered as an applicant.

In the case of Subclass 189 Approval, a job offer is not a requirement. The subclass 190 and 491 require the state or region nomination.
