The Parent Visa allows Australian citizens and permanent residents sponsor their parents to live in Australia either permanently or temporarily! Who is this visa for?
  • The Contributory Parent visa (Subclass 143/173) - enables Australian citizens' family members and eligible New Zealand citizens' family members to join their families in Australia. The visa offers two options which include temporary (Subclass 173) and permanent (Subclass 143) residency.
  • Parent Visa (Subclass 103/804) - for parents of Australian citizens, permanent residents or eligible New Zealand citizens, wanting to rejoin their children in Australia and for intending the cheaper route. It will take time to access available places as this visa is capped and quota limited.
  • Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804/864) - is for the parent with a pension age or older age wanting a permanent residency place to live with children who have Permanent residency in Australia.

Visa Subclasses

Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143/173)

For parents of Australian citizens, endless residents and eligible New Zealand citizens. Subclass 143 grants Permanent Residency and Subclass 173 is a temporary visa that will lapse into Permanent Residency later. Parent Visa (Subclass 103/804)

Parent Visa (Subclass 103/804)

Australian parents who plan to join their children in Australia should apply through this process. The Subclass 103 provides Permanent Residency without any expiration date for processing times. Subclass 804 allows those granted permanent residency who are already in Australia.

Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 804/864)

Specifically for parents who are of pension age (65 or older). Subclass 804 is for parents who are in Australia and applies for a permanent residency, whilst Subclass 864 allows a parent to apply for Permanent Residency from overseas.

Visa Cancellation Risk

If a parent decides to withdraw support at any time in the visa application process, visa applications can be canceled – even after they have waited for multiple years.

Multiple Sponsors Allowed

If a child does not meet the financial requirements to sponsor, they can combine their income and assets with other siblings and jointly sponsor the parents.

No Work Rights on Some Visas

There are parent visa subclasses such as the Subclass 870 ( Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa) which do not allow any work rights limiting income earning capabilities while in Australia.

Requirements

  • Proof of Parent-Child Relationship - You will need to prove your relationship with your Australian child, i.e. supply a birth certificate or adoption papers to show a family relationship.
  • Financial Support by Australian Child - Your Australian child will be required to show they are capable of financially supporting their parents for the duration of their stay in Australia, which includes ensuring they can support their own living charges.
  • Health Check for Applicant - You will be required to undertake a medical examination in order to meet the health requirements for Australia.
  • Character Check for Applicant - You will be required to undertake a character check, which includes criminal background checks, to satisfy the moral standards of entry into Australia.
  • Age limit - To qualify for the Aged Parent Visa, you must be at or above pension age in Australia
  • Meet the Balance of Family Test - All temporary parent visas have the“balance of family” test. To meet eligibility criteria at least half of your children must be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.

Check Eligibility

Prepare Documents

You will need to prepare relationships evidence, financial support evidence, identity evidence and health and character evidence.

Submit Application

You will submit a claim for the 103, 804 or 143 visa and contain all the requirements documents.

Health and Character

You'll complete the medical examinations and give the police clearance.

The time to process a Parent Visa varies but can range in several months to a few years depending on the visa subclass and your situation.
